While attending an archaeological exhibition at Miskatonic University, a bizarre attempt by seeming maintenance workers to extract some insect-pupae from inside the mummies results in investigator To Fu having a fungoid/insect embedded in one of his ears. This results in a series of bizarre dreams and physical changes, the solution to which is offered by the mysterious Professor Mandelbrot. The investigators travel by air, sea and land to the site of the dig the mummies came from in Costa Rica, and thence via a gate into the depths of space and a Mi-Go research centre. Instructed by Professor Mandelbrot to retrieve certain brains stored in the Mi-Go archives, the investigators encounter an advanced Mi-Go scientist. The Mi-Go removes the infestation but the characters are forced to flee back to Earth.
Reaching Earth they find themselves imprisoned by Professor Mandelbrot, revealed as a serpent man, and his degenerate cousins. He is planning to use the brains of the various evil genii the investigators were to bring back to command the armies he has poised to use advanced weapons, poisons and armaments to destroy humanity. However the investigators failed to bring any of the brains back, and the Mi-Go counter attack and destroy Professor Mandelbrot's tower.
A long and extremely hazardous trek through the heat of the New Mexico desert sees the investigators nearly perish but they are finally rescued.
